What happens when we stop filling every single moment? When we stop producing, planning, solving, scrolling, and deciding what comes next?
At first, empty space can feel uncomfortable. But if you stay there long enough, something beautiful begins to happen. You notice more. You hear yourself clearly. Curiosity returns. An idea unfolds that you could not have forced.
Why is making space essential to the creative process?
Having spent so much of my life creating, I’ve begun to realize that a key part of nurturing creativity is knowing when not to create. It is about leaving room around the craft—surrendering the constant need to know what comes next.
Maybe the empty space is not actually empty. Maybe it's where the next thing begins.
Inspiration is everywhere when you slow down to receive it:
- In the unexpected combination of colors on an old Venetian wall in Italy.
- In the way someone has lovingly layered the pieces they cherish.
- In a sweeping landscape, a rusted vintage truck, a piece of music, or a smooth stone held in the palm of my hand.
One of the great gifts of creativity is that it teaches us to pay attention. The more space I make, the more I seem to notice. Not everything that inspires me needs to become a finished project—and the peace of this realization gently replaces the subtle feeling of "not enoughness."
How does creating less lead to more meaningful artisan jewelry?
There’s a strange thing I’m discovering after 20 years of designing jewelry: sometimes creating less creates more!
- More space to notice the fine details in natural materials and daily life.
- More room for inspiration to strike organically without pressure.
- More freedom to follow what feels interesting instead of simply ticking off what needs to be done.
I’ve spent much of my life creating— layered jewelry collections, a business, ideas, the next project. Creating has been one of my favorite ways of being in the world. But lately, I’ve been wondering what happens when I make room for another way of being. When I surrender a little of the doing. When I allow some glorious empty space. When I stop asking creativity to constantly produce something and simply let it breathe.
Surrender isn’t about giving something up. Maybe it’s making enough space to hear what wants to come next.

In that same quiet space, we reimagined our Birthstone designs. Stripping away the excess allowed us to create gentle, lightweight pieces—crafted simply with delicate natural gemstones and in gold-filled and sterling silver to carry personal meaning without overcomplicating your day.
